Math Mindset (alternate title: How We Approach Math 7+)
Math is a fascinating world of patterns and connections. (It's not a set of rules and procedures that you have to memorize; nor is it a set of right or wrong answers!) We will be diving into these patterns and connections in a variety of ways, some of which may be challenging. Challenging ourselves makes us GROW. Here are some other highlights of this growth mindset that we will embrace this year in Pre-Algebra:
- There are often several methods to figure out something, and all are welcome in our class.
- How fast you solve a problem is not important. Depth is much more valuable than speed.
- Collaboration and discussion are integral parts to our learning.
- "Yet" is an awesome word; try adding it to the end of some statements you might be tempted to say. For example: "I can't figure this out -- yet." Or, "This isn't making sense -- yet."
- How you approach a problem and reason through it is often more important than the answer itself.
- We love mistakes! Mistakes are necessary for learning. In fact, your brain literally grows every time you make a mistake.
